"Fun," says one of the graduates of the Spring 1998 Class of the San Marcos Citizen Police Academy, "That just about sums it up. I really enjoyed myself during the whole class. And I learned more about the San Marcos Police Department than I ever expected. The only way I think I could have learned more would be to actually join the police force, and that isn't going to happen at my age."

What is a Citizen Police Academy?
The Citizen police Academy (CPA) is a 12 week course designed to inform citizens that either work in or live in San Marcos, Texas about the San Marcos Police Department. Citizens are instructed in the organizational history of the department, the hiring procedure for all police department employees, the training employees receive, and specific functions employees fulfill.

The CPA is held on Tuesday nights in the spring class and on Thursday nights in the fall class. There is an orientation session at the beginning of the course that does not count as a training session. Also, there are usually two Saturday classes that allow students additional "hands on" training in topics that cannot be taught during the regular weekday classes.

One of the most exciting things students get to do in the Citizen Police Academy is participating in the police driving exercise. Students spend two hours in classroom instruction before going to the driving course. At the end of the day, students get to chase each other in a good guy vs. bad guy scenario. The purpose of the course is to teach our students how officers are taught the right way and not the wrong way of driving when involved in a pursuit.

What does it cost?

Nothing! The only requirements to attend are: you must either live in or work in the city of San Marcos and you must not have any criminal litigation in action or pending during the course. There are additional rules and regulations that are covered during the orientation.
